Read alongside 1 John 3:16-18

Consider the love of Christ

John points to Christ laying down His life as the revelation of love. The reader is then directed toward the needs of other people. A confession of love is brought into contact with the way a person responds when a brother or sister is in need.

This begins close to home. Another person’s difficulty may require time, material help, a truthful conversation or a task that nobody is eager to do. Love pays attention to the need itself.

Serve with understanding

Useful help requires listening. It is easy to assume what another person needs or to promise more than can be provided. Ask questions, understand the situation and act responsibly within the help you are able to give.

Some needs require the knowledge and care of others. Receiving help from a church, family or appropriate professional can be part of a faithful response. No single person is called to carry every responsibility alone.

Let care continue

The first act of help may be followed by less visible work. A visit needs to be repeated. A promise needs to be kept. A child, an older person or a struggling household may need patient attention over time.

Reading lives of service can help a believer notice this ordinary endurance. Return from the story to the people who are actually present. Pray for wisdom about what love requires and give a truthful response. The value of the act lies in its faithfulness to Christ and its care for the person receiving it.
