Biography

William Nagenda was born in Uganda in 1912. Educated at King's College, Budo, and Makerere, he initially worked in a government office at Entebbe. A meeting with Simeon Nsibambi helped move him from inherited Christian affiliation toward a personal commitment to Christ.[1]

He married Sala, whose partnership belongs within the story of his ministry. Together they joined the work at Gahini in Rwanda, alongside Yosiya and Dorokasi Kinuka and Joe and Decie Church. Nagenda became a prominent African leader in the East African Revival.[1]

He entered theological training at Mukono in 1940 but was expelled during a dispute involving revival-minded students. He subsequently worked as an evangelist based at Namutamba. In 1946 he travelled to England with Kinuka and Joe Church; further journeys brought his testimony to audiences outside East Africa.[1]

Illness began to limit his public work in the 1960s, and Sala increasingly shared the speaking responsibilities. He died in 1973. His legacy is inseparable from the African believers and households through whom the revival spread, and from Sala's ministry alongside his own.[1]
