Biography

R. W. Schambach was an American evangelist who was known for his large tent revivals and his fiery preaching. He was born in the 1920s in the United States, in a family of German descent. He grew up in a plain home and received little formal schooling. As a young man, he was converted and felt a call to preach. He joined the ranks of the Pentecostal healing evangelists in the years after the Second World War. He worked in the circle of the great tent revivalists, who held meetings across the country.

He became associated with A. A. Allen, one of the leading healing evangelists of the 1950s, and he served as a part of his team. Allen was known for his huge tent campaigns, which drew crowds of thousands. Schambach took part in these meetings as a preacher and an organizer. He learned the craft of the tent revival from Allen, and he took over many of its methods. He was a strong and energetic speaker, who had a booming voice and a good deal of humor. He emphasized divine healing and the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the 1960s, he began his own ministry, which he called Schambach Revivals. He set up a large tent, which he took from city to city. The meetings were held in the style of the old tent revivals, with loud singing, preaching and prayer for the sick. They drew thousands of people, many of them from the working class and from the black community. He was known for his shouting, for his dramatic gestures and for his stress on faith. He called people to come to the front of the tent and receive the Spirit. He was a favorite of those who loved the old-time Pentecostal style.

He settled in Tyler, Texas, where he built the headquarters of his ministry, and he started a Bible school, called Schambach Bible College. He published a magazine and a number of books. He had a television program, which was broadcast in the 1980s and 1990s. He also traveled to many parts of the world, and he held revivals in Africa, Latin America and Europe. He had a loyal following. His preaching was marked by humor and a strong sense of the miraculous. He also lived under the criticism of those who thought that his methods were too sensational.

His ministry, like that of many in the healing revival, was subject to the concerns of the fund-raising practices and the claims of healing. Some critics have said that he placed too much stress on giving, and that some of his claims could not be verified. He has not been free of these charges. He was a man of deep convictions and strong faith. He was also a man who put much of his earnings back into the work.
