Biography

Mary Warburton Booth was a missionary and writer associated with the Zenana Bible and Medical Mission in India. The introductory material to her book Take This Child records that she had served with the society since 1908 and identifies work among children at Gorakhpur.[1]

Her account is a firsthand missionary publication, not a later biography. It offers evidence of the work she and her colleagues wanted readers to understand, while also reflecting the assumptions and language of its period. Indian children and families were participants in that history, not simply illustrations for the missionary's convictions.[1]

The book carries an introduction by Amy Wilson Carmichael of Dohnavur. Its title page also identifies Booth as the author of Jewels of the East, The Sign, and Radiance. These traceable publications provide a firmer account of her work than assigning unsupported birth dates or family relationships.[1]

Her surviving writing connects Christian service with the care and formation of children. Reading the original publication gives access to that purpose and its setting. The documentary account presented here keeps to the identified missionary and her published work, without confusing her with another member of the Booth family.[1]
