Biography

Joyce Risper Chuma Were, often called Dada Joyce, lived from 1934 to 2021 and served within Anglican Christianity in Kenya. She became a leader in the East African Revival Fellowship, where testimony, prayer, and practical Christian fellowship were central to her work.[1]

Her service included Bible teaching, evangelism, counselling, mentoring, and leading worship. She spoke in revival conventions in Kenya and beyond, while also working among her family, neighbours, parish, and local fellowship at Lubinu.[1]

The published account remembers her singing as a distinctive part of that service. She learned and taught songs in local languages and Kiswahili, bringing worship into both ordinary gatherings and periods of illness. This aspect of her life helps explain influence that was exercised through participation rather than through a formal office alone.[1]

Stories of opposition and conversion are recorded within the fellowship's testimony. They should be read with their attribution rather than turned into newly invented dialogue or scenes.[1]

Were's life shows the importance of women in the transmission of revival across households and communities. Her legacy includes people she taught and encouraged, as well as a public witness that continued over many years.[1]
