Biography

John Piper was born in 1946 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in the United States, and grew up in Greenville, South Carolina. His father was an itinerant Christian evangelist, and the family's religious life helped shape Piper's early familiarity with preaching and the Bible. He eventually became a Baptist pastor, theologian, author, and teacher whose work has focused on the glory of God, the joy of knowing Him, the authority of Scripture, Christian perseverance, and the missionary calling of the church.

From 1964 to 1968, Piper studied English literature at Wheaton College in Illinois. During those years he met Noël Henry, whom he married in 1968. His training in literature contributed to his continuing attention to language, argument, and the close reading of texts. He then studied at Fuller Theological Seminary in California, receiving a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1971. During his theological studies he encountered the writings of Jonathan Edwards, whose account of God's glory and the affections of the Christian life became a lasting influence. Piper also came to value the writing of C. S. Lewis, particularly its treatment of joy and desire.

Piper continued his education in Germany at the University of Munich, completing a doctorate in New Testament studies in 1974. He then returned to the United States and taught biblical studies at Bethel College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from 1974 to 1980. These years gave him an academic foundation in biblical interpretation, but he eventually concluded that his primary calling was to pastoral preaching.

In 1980, Piper became pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He served the congregation for nearly thirty-three years, until 2013. During that period he preached through biblical books, led the congregation through changes and growth, taught on Christian life and doctrine, and encouraged involvement in global missions. His sermons commonly combined close exposition of Scripture with direct questions about faith, worship, suffering, holiness, and the priorities of everyday life.

A defining theme of Piper's ministry is his teaching often described as Christian Hedonism. He uses the expression to argue that the Christian pursuit of deepest and lasting joy is fulfilled in God rather than in possessions, status, or pleasure considered apart from Him. This conviction is especially associated with his book Desiring God, first published in the 1980s. Its central formulation is that God is most glorified in people when they are most satisfied in Him. Piper presents this as an account of Christian worship and obedience, not as an endorsement of self-centred living.

Piper helped establish Desiring God as a teaching ministry in 1994. Through its website, publications, conferences, podcasts, and recorded messages, the organisation has made much of his preaching and writing freely available. After leaving the Bethlehem pastorate in 2013, Piper concentrated more fully on teaching and writing through Desiring God. He also serves as chancellor of Bethlehem College and Seminary, an institution associated with the church and dedicated to Christian education and ministry training.

Piper has written more than fifty books. Among his widely read works are Desiring God, The Pleasures of God, Future Grace, Don't Waste Your Life, God Is the Gospel, and Providence. His writings examine not only doctrine and biblical interpretation but also personal suffering, prayer, evangelism, missions, marriage, joy, and perseverance. His Ask Pastor John programme addresses questions from listeners about Christian faith and practice, while his Look at the Book teaching series models close attention to the wording and argument of Scripture.

Piper and Noël have five children. They have lived for many years in the Minneapolis area, where his decades of pastoral work remain an important part of his life story. His influence extends through both the church he served and the books, sermons, and teaching resources that continue to be used internationally. Across these different forms of work, Piper has returned repeatedly to the conviction that the Christian life is meant to find its highest satisfaction in God and to display His worth in worship, obedience, endurance, and service to others.
