How to Know the Voice of God
Christians often ask how to know the voice of God because they want to obey Him and are afraid of being deceived. That desire is understandable. The safest place to begin is not with techniques for hearing an inner voice but with the ways God has already told us to test what we receive.
In John 10 Jesus describes Himself as the Shepherd whose sheep know Him and follow Him. The chapter is about Christ, His people and false shepherds. It is not a promise that every thought which feels personal is a direct message from God. The sure centre is the Shepherd Himself and the truth He has given.
Scripture has a unique authority that impressions, dreams, advice and circumstances do not possess. Whatever guidance a Christian believes they have received must be judged under the written Word. God does not need us to protect an impression from biblical examination. If something contradicts Scripture, encourages sin, exalts a person above Christ or requires us to call evil good, it should be rejected.
First John 4 says to test the spirits because not every spiritual claim is from God. Discernment therefore includes doctrine. What is being said about Jesus Christ? Does it agree with apostolic truth? What fruit follows the teaching? Is the person making the claim willing to be corrected?
For decisions where Scripture does not name one required choice, seek wisdom rather than pretending certainty. Pray. Study biblical principles that bear on the matter. Consider responsibilities God has already given you. Listen to mature believers who are not trying to control you. Pay attention to providence, but do not make circumstances infallible. A closed door may be guidance, delay, protection or simply an obstacle; it must be interpreted carefully.
Inner promptings can be taken seriously without being treated as Scripture. You can say, “I believe I should do this,” without saying, “God told me,” when you do not have grounds for that stronger claim. Humility protects both you and the people who hear you.
God is not honoured by spiritual confidence that cannot be tested. He is honoured when His people love truth enough to examine their own impressions.
If you want to know God’s voice, become deeply acquainted with His Word, stay close to Christ, keep a teachable conscience and refuse the pressure to make ordinary guidance sound supernatural.
